This mom is getting creative. Yep. I sure am. You know those sweet, darling daughters of mine? They love phone time. All.the.time. While I definitely don’t allow them that coveted phone time as much as they want, sometimes I’ll let them have it. With a sneaky motive. You want to play a game?? Check out this “super great for your brain game that I will never tell you is building your vocabulary skills.” Definitely. These are 5Word Building & Spelling Apps that are perfect for tweens and teens.
I do have one tween who loves spelling. She believes that if I put her in a spelling bee, she would win all the prizes.
All the time.
She also regularly asks me for spelling work.
Plus, she’s a super reader, so her vocabulary and spelling abilities are actually pretty great.
Maybe not as great as her ego leads her to believe…
But when I’m busy with 3 other kids, taking care of my home and running a business, I can’t always keep up with her need for words.
While I’m definitely not a ‘sit your kid in front of a screen for hours’ kind of mom, I am the type that will use her love for electronics and her love for words to my advantage.
Here, you can have screen time. On these games. Only.
I am an awesome mom… *wink*
You can be just as awesome as me, if you want. I’ll share the ‘best mom in the world’ title. Just this once.
We downloaded the Amazon Underground App store and took advantage of the fun, free apps and games that they offer to get some great vocabulary and spelling games.
Now, I’m not talking, learn your ABCs sort of apps. While my preschooler has plenty of those, my tweens are a little bit past that level…
These apps combine visual scanning, reasoning, problem solving, AND spelling to work on vocabulary skills.
5 Vocabulary & Spelling Apps for Tweens
Word Mix Pro
Use letter dice to create as many words as you can before the timer runs out. You can pair and un-pair the dice as fast as your fingers can move.
3 Letters: Guess the Word
Much like a word ladder, you get a series of incomplete words that all end in the same three letters. You need to figure out what three letters will make each line into a real word.
4 Pics 1 Word: More Words
Gives 4 pictures and you have to use the available letter tiles to guess what they all have in common. Some are really obvious and some are really challenging! Works on reasoning while working on spelling.
Half Bejeweled, half word find this fun game requires you to make matches of the pictures to uncover letters. Once the letters are revealed, you can combine letters in any order to create words and earn points.
22 Clues: Word Game
This one provides phonemes and requires players to combine the phonemes to create the words for all of the pictures. Think: blends, digraphs, vowel teams… Really great for kids who need help applying the correct phoneme to each word. Read or reed? Pail or pale?
Bonus vocabulary-building game!
A combination of a crossword puzzle and a word search. Using the clues, you need to find the words. The twist is the letters are not in a straight line. Instead the board is set up a lot like Boggle®.
To get the apps, download the Amazon Underground app from your Android smartphone.
The Amazon Underground app combines the Amazon shopping that we are all used to with 100% free apps, games, and even in-app items. Unlimited lives, levels, upgrades – everything! You can also get instant streaming of Amazon Instant Video. Very cool.
