It’s difficult to engage Preschoolers and Kindergartners with math worksheets. We’ve all been there! Faces LIGHT UP when you pull out a bin of rainbow counting bears, colorful chain links, or the classic favorite…DICE! Conversely, little bodies seem to WITHER when with equal enthusiasm we pull out a numbers worksheet for students to fill in.

Interactive activities like Find the Missing Number Level 1 Numbers 11-20 provide a hands-on opportunity to work on fine motor and technology skills while learning numbers.

Available in Google Slides or Seesaw, the activity allows young learners to find the missing number in a series, focusing on numbers 11-20. Each slide contains a sequence of numbers at the top and three choices at the bottom.

Simply click on the number that belongs in the series and drag it into the box. The choices at the bottom help young learners narrow the choices and perhaps feel less overwhelmed.

Finally, I would encourage learners to read the number sequence aloud, perhaps even backwards!

Online activities like this provide that engagement we’re looking for without the hassle of real-life counting cubes.

Importance of Counting

Much like children crawl before they walk, counting is often the very first mathematical concept they grasp. Parents and caregivers engage toddlers and Preschoolers in fun counting songs and games long before children even have a sense of “Math.”

Early childhood counting is extremely important because it gives kids crucial background knowledge to draw upon when learning numbers becomes more complex.

Counting knowledge helps children understand:

  • Numbers are represented by digits
  • Numbers increase as we go up, decrease as we go down
  • Digits can also be represented by groups of objects

As children become more comfortable with oral counting, they can shift their attention to digits, sequencing, and finding the missing number.

Encourage counting in Preschoolers and Kindergartners by:

  • Counting toys when putting them away
  • Having a backwards countdown when it’s time to do something/go somewhere: 10, 9, 8….let’s go outside!
  • Begin introducing written numbers with number cards or playing cards
  • Represent digits with groups of objects
  • Manipulate groups of objects to show the SAME number in DIFFERENT groups

In Seesaw, use the Text tool (click on the large T) to be able to highlight each number to move it.

How to Adapt the Activity

Learners should first be comfortable with numbers 1-10 before delving into numbers 11-20. Some children will be ready to extend their understanding of teen numbers while others will need support.

Here are some ideas to adapt the activity based on the unique needs of each learner.

  • Provide a number line or number chart to refer to throughout the activity
  • Ask children to recite each number sequence both forwards and backwards
  • Use the activity as a springboard to create number sequences using skip counting by tens or fives.
  • Print the slides and practice filling in the missing number with a pencil
  • Build the missing numbers with base ten blocks, counting bears, mini erasers or any other object that works
