Keeping the Standards

Before entering first grade, kindergartners are expected to be able to fluently add and subtract within 10. Additionally, they should know how to add and subtract within 10 using objects or drawings to represent the problem.

Subtraction Vocabulary and Symbols

The concept of subtraction can be tricky for young children to comprehend. You need to help kindergartners visualize the concept of taking things away to find out what’s left (the difference).

In addition to learning new academic vocabulary, remembering the function of different mathematical symbols can be extremely challenging for little learners.

Google Slides or Seesaw

Whether you prefer using Google Slides or Seesaw, this cute packet of subtraction worksheets provides access to both. These colorful, kid-friendly, interactive slides allow a fun way to practice subtraction activities for kindergarten mathematicians.

Each slide worksheet focuses on a visual word problem with big strawberries on paper plate. Some of the strawberries are crossed through, to visually represent the take-away (subtraction) concept.

The slides also feature big bold blocks, numbered 1-10, in a layout similar to a tens frame or number line. A subtraction equation with fill-in the blanks is printed below the picture. Children will click and drag the numbered blocks to fill in the equations. The blocks can help children utilize different strategies such as counting up or counting down to solve the subtraction problems.

Challenge students by increasing difficulty by having them fill-in different parts of the equation first. This activity will also help to improve the students’ understanding of the different parts of the equation.

Extending the Math Power

Print the slides to use as math worksheets for additional hands on subtraction activities.

Provide your child with little erasers or other small tokens to help them physically represent the subtraction problems.

For an easy center or small group activity, slide the worksheets into sleeve protectors. Give children a dry-erase marker and have them write the numbers in the blanks to fill-in the subtraction equation.

For even more addition and subtraction fun, give your little one a handful of strawberries. Help them understand the relationship between addition and subtraction while enjoying a delicious math treat!

This fun subtraction activity packet will have your kindergartners mastering subtraction facts and demonstrating fluency for addition. Continued practice of these different activities will help your kindergartner towards first grade status!

This is a great activity! However, there is no zero number tile for slide number three.

I downloaded ‘Strawberry Subtraction’ to use with my Kindergarten class but when I open in ‘presenter’ mode in GoogleDoc the tiles will not move. Instead, when I click on the tile I want to use the document progresses to the next slide instead. How do I fix this? I am excited to use with my friends 🙂

These slides are designed to work in Edit mode, not Present mode.

Life Over C’s is amazing, colorful and engaging for my kindergarteners. I have purchased your math bundle for Math Stations during the “regular” school year. I was sooo incredibly excited to see that you were making Google Slides now that we are in such a challenging teaching situation. I also want to tell you thank you from the bottom of my heart. You make learning engaging, for the kids without breaking our bank as teachers. You do so much for free…you are to be commended for what you do to help. Again…I can’t thank you enough!
