Tweens and technology. Two words that can be very difficult to handle. Especially when you put them together! Whether it’s talking to friends on social media, watching YouTube videos or playing video games, there are a lot of passive things to do on tablets. We had tablets while we were traveling full-time, but now that we’re not traveling, those tablets have become a sore spot in our home. So for the summer and until we decide otherwise, the tablets have disappeared. I know, you are thinking that I’m a crazy mean mom. And they are too when they think about it, but the reality is, that now they have no excuse, but to go play outside and enjoy the summer! Here are 15 great outdoor activities for tweens (and teens too!)
15 Outdoor Activities for Tweens (and Teens!)
Create your own DIY scenery! My kids have been doing sidewalk chalk murals all summer long. They draw scenery and then act out a play on the scenery.
Create a ring-toss game. The kids will have fun both making the game and playing with the game and they can use the bottles to decorate their bedroom after they are done.
Change up the ring-toss game and do a glow-in-the-dark ring-toss!! Late night fun! My tweens (and teen) love any excuse to stay up past their normal bedtime.
You’ve seen the water blobs…so cool! But have you tried a glow stick water blob? This would be so much fun!
And if your tweens want even more nighttime activities, try glow-in-the-dark bowling!!
Have a marshmallow fight with these fun marshmallow shooters.
Have fun with Nerf gun shooting practice! A great way to work on concentration!
Create a work of art with squirt guns! Such a great way to paint!
Have the kids challenge each other to a raft race! They can each build their own raft and see whose raft travels the fastest!
Make S’Mores in a solar oven!! A great way to learn about engineering and make a tasty snack too!
Have a watermelon seed spitting contest!! What a fun way to enjoy watermelon!
Try this floating soda experiment! The results are so cool!
Create an American Ninja Warrior backyard obstacle course! Such a fun way to get the kids up and moving instead of sitting inside with their tablets.
Squirt gun races! Host a squirt gun race in and out of the pool for a great way to get in some exercise!
By the way, did you know that kids 8-18 years old devote an average of 7 hours and 38minutes using entertainment media in a typical day (more than 53hours a week). (Kaiser Family Foundation)
Crazy right?!?!
If that’s not inspiration to turn off the tablets and get them outside, I don’t know what is… These outdoor activities for tweens are sure to help!
