Every morning in my preschool classroom, we have time for open-ended play. By far, one of my preschoolers favorite stations is the sensory bin!  We love using all different kinds of sensory bin fillers like water, ice, pasta, beans, and just recently, our new favorite filler-  chia seeds!!  My kids have really enjoyed this new sensory bin filler!  There is just something about the squishy, squashy texture of chia seeds soaked in water that brings them so much joy.  Adding insects and bugs to this bin only added to the fun!  This Slimey Chia Seed Bugs and Insects Sensory Bin is not only incredibly fun and exciting, but it also sparks creativity, imaginative play, and makes little learners curious about the little world of insects and bugs all around them.

How To Use This Slimey Chia Seed Bugs and Insects Sensory Bin:

This sensory bin can be used as an independent activity, as a center during free play in a classroom, or as a small group activity.  Honestly, I tend to think the more the merrier when it comes to sensory bins if you have a large enough sensory table!  If you don’t have a large table, you could always double or triple the recipe and set up more than one bin in your classroom!

Materials You Will Need For This Slimey Chia Seed Bug and Insect Sensory Bin:

  • ¼ C Chia Seeds 
  • 1 ½ C Water 
  • Medium bowl 
  • Yellow liquid food coloring 
  • Spoon 
  • ⅓ C Cornstarch 
  • Small/Medium sensory bin 
  • Plastic bugs 
  • Scoops 
  • Tongs 
  • Tweezers

Step-by-Step Instructions For How To Make A Slimey Chia Seed Bugs and Insects Sensory Bin:

Step One:

Gather all of your materials together to make this Slimey Chia Seed Bugs and Insects Sensory Bin.

Step Two:

In a medium size mixing bowl, add your water and chia seeds.  Let your child get involved in this step and have them stir the mixture together!  Add a few drops of the yellow food coloring and stir, continue to add food coloring and stir the mixture until it is your desired shade of yellow! 

Step Three:

Refrigerate the chia seed and water mixture in the refrigerator for 24 hours to allow the chia seeds time to absorb the water.

Step Four:

 Add ⅓ of a cup of cornstarch to the chia seed mixture and stir with a spoon until it is all mixed together.

Step Five:

Grab your sensory bin and dump the chia seed goo into it.  Add plastic bugs, tongs, scoops, tweezers, and get ready for some super fun sensory exploration!
