Benefits of Creating a Christmas Paper Plate Wreath
Why Should I Use Craft Activities Like This Christmas Wreath With My Children?
Doing craft projects like this Christmas Wreath have so many benefits for your kids!
Creativity: Crafts are the perfect way to let your child’s creativity shine! Your kids will love making their Christmas paper plate wreath their own by putting their own special touch on it. I always love seeing my kids beam with pride after they have made their own unique masterpiece while we are doing craft projects.
Fine Motor Skills: When you are working on this craft project, your child will be cutting, gluing, and painting. All of these things are so good for fine motor skills. As they hold the pasta needed to make the craft they will use their pincer grasp and the little muscles of their hands and fingers. This helps to improve their fine motor skills and is beneficial for daily tasks such a zipping up coats, tying shoes, holding a pencil, picking up toys, and so much more!
Listening Comprehension: Doing craft projects like this Christmas paper plate wreath requires children to listen and follow a set of verbal directions. This is fantastic for listening comprehension and getting used to following instructions. If you have children that struggle with following verbal directions, you can even include some pictures of the steps for them as a visual tool too!

A Craft Activity And Sensory Experience in One!
This Christmas paper plate wreath craft is not only wonderful for fine motor skills and hand eye coordination, but it is also great for sensory exploration! The hard and bumpy texture of the pasta makes this craft project have a sensory component to it as well. Once the paint has dried your child can compare the texture of the smooth plate to the bumpy pasta, and even feel the texture of the bow and ribbon that you added as well!
Who knew craft activities could be an amazing sensory experience too!

Step-by-Step Instructions For How To Make A Beautiful Christmas Paper Plate Wreath for Preschoolers:
Step One:
Gather all of your materials and get ready to make a beautiful Christmas Paper Plate Wreath Craft!
First, you are going to paint your paper plate! If you have two different shades of green paint, you can use the darker one for this part. Have your child paint the entire plate green from edge to edge and then set it aside to dry.
Teacher Tip: If you are short on time, or just want to cut down on the number of steps to complete this craft, you can use a green paper plate for your wreath so you don’t have to paint it.
Step Two:
Now it’s time to paint your pasta green! Grab another paper plate and place your pasta on top of it. Help your child to paint both side of the pasta green with a paint brush and then allow it time to dry.
Teacher Tip: If you are looking for another quick and easy way to paint your pasta, check out How to Dye Pasta for Sensory Play and Crafts here!
Step Three:
Now it’s time to prepare your paper plate. Once your plate is dry, cut the center of the plate out. I love saving the center of the plate and letting my children have free range to color, paint, or decorate it!
Step Four:
Using hot glue (under very close supervision!) or school glue, add the painted pasta to the paper plate. We lined ours up, but your child can turn them however they would like! I have found it is best to glue them in a single layer and not stack the pasta, because once the craft dries the top pieces usually fall off if we have made more than one layer.
Step Five:
Add a bow to the front of your wreath and a ribbon to hang it with on the back. You can attach these using hot glue or school glue.
Step Six:
It’s time to show off your amazing Christmas paper plate wreath!!
Yay! You made your Beautiful Christmas Paper Plate Wreath for Preschoolers. What Now?
Great job! You just finished making your Christmas Paper Plate Wreath Craft! Now, it is time to display it in your home or classroom!
You can hang the wreath by the ribbon, or you could add a magnet to the back so that it can be hung on the refrigerator or another magnetic surface.
Many schools do door decorating contests, so you could use them to decorate your door for the holidays, or make your own bulletin board display! I have a strip of corkboard outside of my classroom and this is where I love to display craft projects like this wreath that my preschoolers make.
How Can I Modify This Christmas Paper Plate Wreath Craft?
Here are some easy ways you can change up this wreath craft! You can pick whatever will work best for your child based on their age and abilities!
- Use different kinds of pasta! We love using farfalle (bowtie) pasta for this craft project, but feel free to try a different kind of pasta if you would like. You can follow the same directions for painting the pasta as you would for the farfalle.
- Pick a different material other than pasta to use for your wreath. Beads, pom poms, glitter, and tissue paper can all put a fun twist on this wreath.
- Allow your child to add their own creative twist on this wreath by adding some small decorations as ornaments or by using a different crafting material (pipe cleaners, streamers, wiki sticks, etc…) for the bow.
- Use different size paper plates to make wreaths of different sizes to hang around your classroom or home!

What paint works best for painting pasta?
Really any paint that you have at your house will be good for this project! Acrylic, tempera, or a washable paint would work great! If you don’t have any paint at your house, you could add the green color with markers, it will just take longer to prepare the pasta to be glued onto the wreath!

How do I make craft projects less messy?
I love doing crafts, but they can get a little messy at times! Here are some helpful tips for keeping the mess to a minimum while making this Christmas paper plate wreath!
– Get all of your materials ready and prepared ahead of time. Keep them contained using small containers or craft trays.
– Use a disposable table cloth or newspaper underneath your projects for quick clean up.
– If you have a small group or class you are doing a craft with, have a coloring sheet or some books close by for early finishers so they don’t start to play with the extra materials.
– Less is more! Start with a small amount of paint or glue for your child. You can always give them more if you need to, but this will help prevent big spills and messes!
