Teaching the difference between the letter “M” and the letter “W” used to feel impossible — until I created this multi-sensory uppercase letter M craft! Multi-sensory activities to make learning fun and memorable. One of my favorite ways to do this is through experiences that involve more than one of our five senses.

Uppercase Letter M Craft Supplies:

  • Paper or cardstock
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Markers or crayons
  • Optional: Marshmallows for the mouse’s nose

For the letter m, I like to use a combination of crafting and sign language. I pick up my mouse craft and tell my students, “Our mouse loves to munch!” Then, I demonstrate the sign for the letter “M” (with fingers down) in front of my mouth—just like little mouse teeth! I emphasize that the letter M in sign language is made with three fingers down over the thumb, and mice teeth munch down, too!

This playful activity not only captures their attention but also helps kids confidently distinguish “M” from its upside-down twin, “W.” If you’re a pre-K teacher or a parent working on early literacy at home, try this trick to clear up that M/W confusion! Perfect hands-on learning to do alongside this uppercase letter M craft.

Multi-sensory Magic of the Uppercase Letter M Craft

Any time I can use a multi-sensory experience to teach a concept, I go for it! Engaging multiple senses—like sight, sound, touch, and movement—helps kids form stronger connections to their learning. With this uppercase letter M craft: M is for Mouse, they see the letter “M,” hear the “mmm” sound as they pretend to munch like a mouse, and feel the shape of the letter M as they work on their craft. This playful, hands-on approach reinforces letter recognition, builds fine motor skills, and supports different learning styles. Adding sign language is another great trick to strengthen the connection between the uppercase letter M and its sound, preventing mix-ups with W.

Step-by-Step Instructions for the Uppercase Letter M Craft:

Step One:

First, ask your little ones (or decide for them) if they plan to color their uppercase Letter M craft. Print the black and white or color version of the craft. When printed onto cardstock, the craft holds together well when glued.  But if that isn’t available, regular white paper is just fine.  You can always glue the craft together onto a piece of construction paper.

Step Two:

Coloring a craft before cutting is much easier than coloring pieces of paper that are already cut, so I like to have the kids color the uppercase letter M craft first and then cut. Remind the students of the letter name and sound by repeating the anchor words ‘mouse’ and ‘munch.’

Step Three:

Glue the ears, whiskers, hands, ears, and feet onto the letter M body. For a little bit of extra fun and letter sound practice, glue a marshmallow on for the nose.

Keep Learning with the Uppercase Letter M Craft!

Once the uppercase letter M craft is finished, every child will have their very own “pet mouse” to take home. But the learning doesn’t have to stop there! Encourage families to reinforce the learning at home by munching on foods that start with the “M” sound. Ask parents to snap a picture of their child enjoying a snack with their mouse and send it to school! Some ideas could include meat, mango, meatballs, mashed potatoes, melon, mozzarella, and mac & cheese! These pictures would make an adorable book for the classroom library.

Modify and Adapt Uppercase Letter M Craft

I know multi-sensory activities can be overwhelming for children with sensory sensitivities. As soon as I said the word “multi-sensory,” I immediately thought of all the students in my class with sensory challenges and how important it is to meet their needs. Here are some ways to adapt the activity to ensure every child can participate comfortably:

  • Simplify the Craft: Pre-cut the craft pieces so kids only need to assemble them and limit choices by providing a clear example for them to follow.
  • Use Calm Colors and Materials: Choose neutral or soft-colored paper, and avoid messy or noisy materials like glitter or textured paper.
  • Break It Down: Guide kids through one step at a time and use a visual schedule with pictures of each step.
  • Reduce Environmental Stimuli: Create a quieter workspace for kids who are easily overstimulated. Turn down any music and close the door to the workspace to limit extra noise.
  • Keep it Organized: Limit the number of children working on the craft at one time. Allow students to rotate through the craft as a station.

Being Responsible with Uppercase Letter M Craft

Soon, all your little ones will have a ‘pet mouse,’ and that will be the perfect time to introduce responsibility in a fun and playful way. Kids can practice caring for their ‘pet mouse’ and make a real connection to the concept of responsibility. Use their mouse to spark conversations about caring for pets— How do we take care of them? What do pets eat? Do we feed dogs donuts like in If You Give a Dog a Donut?

If you think the conversation might head in this direction, don’t worry—you can lean into it! Go check out this If You Give a Dog a Donut lesson plan for a brief, lighthearted detour from the responsibility discussion. Then, get back on track by presenting students with a log to take home and write down how they care for their pets. Naturally move into conversations about real-life responsibilities like chores, studying, and reading!

What are some easy letter m words?

If you are planning a lesson around the letter m, you might need words (other than mouse) to practice with your preschoolers. Here are some simple words you might incorporate into the lesson: mom, man, map, mat, mop, mud, and mug. These words are familiar to preschoolers and easy to pronounce. I listed only CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant) with short vowels that preschoolers can easily sound out with adequate letter knowledge. If your little ones have a good grasp of the alphabet, encourage them to sound out more CVC words with one of these 30+ Kindergarten CVC Word Printables and Activities.

How does arts and crafts help fine motor skills?

Arts and crafts are a fantastic way to build fine motor skills for your students or children at home! The small muscles in the hands and fingers will be strengthened as they cut, glue, draw, and paint. These same muscles will be used for everyday tasks like writing, buttoning shirts, or tying shoes!

How can I incorporate learning the sound of M during the craft?

As kids work on their letter M craft, make it a point to say the “mmm” sound often! Encourage them to make the sound as they work on their craft (like pretending to munch like a mouse) and associate the sound with the letter. You can even turn it into a game by asking them to think of other words that start with the letter M.

How to make crafting with preschoolers more enjoyable?

Preparation is key here! Keep the activity simple and fun. Focus on the process, not the end result—preschoolers are still developing fine motor skills, focus, attention, stamina, perseverance, and so much more…it’s okay if their crafts aren’t perfect. Make sure to offer a variety of materials (paper, fabric, paint, etc.) and give them the freedom to explore and use their imagination.
