Browns, oranges, yarn and felt make the perfect combination for decorations in the fall. Putting them all together makes the effect cozy and warm even if it doesn’t actually get rid of the need for the fireplace. And seriously, I love having the fireplace on anyway… This pom pom and felt fall garland is a fantastic way to bring the beautiful colors of fall inside and looks so amazing!
You’ll need 4 colors of felt (1 ‘sheet’ each) and 4 skeins of yarn in various colors, plus a large fork to get started.
To make the garland, I started off by making a bunch of pom poms. I found that it was easiest to make them on one of my big serving forks. I put a long string or yarn in the middle tine to so that I would able to tie off the pom pom and then using a separate strand, wrapped the fork 75 times.
Then, using the first piece of yarn, I tied a tight knot around the wrapped yarn. It needs to be tight, so that the pieces of the pom pom don’t easily fall out.
I found it easiest to make the pom poms like a factory line, so I wrapped and tied them all and then went back to cut and trim them. It was much faster that way.
Cut open the pom poms. They will probably look like a wild lion’s mane at that point, but that’s okay because the next step is to trim them to make them rounded. Leave the long strands from the middle string to tie them onto the garland.
I made a little over 40 pom poms, so I decided to do two strands of garland, the first one used 40 pom poms and I made a pattern with the colors.
I laid out the pattern on my desk first, so that I wouldn’t get confused when I had the entire garland sitting on my lap.
Tie the strings from the pom poms on to a long string. Make sure to tie a knot into the ends of the long string so that the pom poms don’t slide off.
Then, I used the felt to supplement the rest of the pom poms for a second strand of garland.
I made a template leaf and then traced it onto the rest of the felt pieces. I found that I could easily cut two pieces of felt together to save time.
Then, I arranged all the felt leaves into sets of three and joined them together with a few dots of hot glue.
I cut a small hole in one leaf in each set and threaded a string through it so that I could tie them onto the garland.
I made another pattern with the pom poms and leaves and tied them all onto another long string.
Then I hung them up in my living room to bring a little happy to our fall!
