Fall Leaf Puppets

Making fall leaf puppets is a staple activity in my preschool classroom. I love it because it’s a springboard for more exploration of the season. You can take the kids outside to find and identify real leaves, you can use the puppets for role playing to promote oral language, and you can tie in other leaf-themed activities in math, science, and reading. I know we love teaching fall themes at Life Over Cs because we have TONS of other resources, from salt painting to leaf patterns and graphing, check out more fall leaf learning activities here.

If you enjoy tying outdoor learning into your lessons, you’ll also love our Easy Fall Tree Craft where kids will use real leaves and twigs to make an adorable creation. If you bought faux leaves in bulk and are wondering what to do with the leftovers, grab some paper plates and make these Leaf Wreaths that double as seasonal decor for the home or classroom.

Making Fall Leaf Puppets

As far as preschool craft projects go, this one is easy! You don’t need a lot of supplies, and there are few steps from start to completion! On Life Over C’s we focus on crafts for kids that are easy to set up, but provide lots of opportunities for creative expression.

If you don’t have colored craft sticks, no worries! The puppets look equally cute with plain wooden craft sticks, or you can add to the project by having kids paint their own stick before assembling the puppets.

Materials You Will Need for Fall Leaf Puppets:

  • Faux fall leaves
  • Googly eyes
  • Glue
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Black permanent marker (optional for mouth)
supplies for the fall leaf activity.

Step-by-Step Instructions for the Fall Leaf Puppet Craft for Preschoolers:

Step One:

Place a small strip of glue on the end of a popsicle stick.

Attach the popsicle stick to the back of a faux leaf. Repeat this process for the number of leaf puppets you want to make. Set aside to dry. (Be careful not to put too much weight on it or it could stick to the paper or surface underneath.)

Step Two:

Turn the leaf back to the front side. Place two dots of glue on the leaf and carefully press the googly eyes onto the glue. Provide adequate time for the drying process.

Teacher Tip: I always remind students that “a little dab will do ya” when it comes to glue!

Step Three:

Use the black marker to draw a mouth on each leaf if desired.

Allow the children ample time to engage in and play with their leaf puppets.

Yay! You did it. What now?

This craft comes together rather quickly, but you can expect a ton of use after the glue dries! Kids can keep their leaves as a leaf buddy throughout the rest of your fall theme, they can take them home to share with their families, or they can use them during class as pointers or talking puppets.

Ways to Adapt the Leaf Craft

Simplify the Process: For younger children or those with fine motor skill challenges, use larger craft sticks and google eyes. This makes it easier for small hands to handle and reduces the complexity of the task.

Alternative Adhesives: Use peel-and-stick googly eyes and/or adhesive dots for attaching the leaves and eyes, instead of glue. This can be less messy and more manageable for children who might struggle with liquid glue.

Decorative Options: Provide a variety of decorating materials such as markers, stickers, or small pieces of fabric to allow children to personalize their leaf puppets further. This adaptation encourages creativity and lets children express their individual artistic preferences.

Interactive Elements: Add an element of sensory play by including textured leaves, such as felt or foam leaves, and offering different types of googly eyes (e.g., different sizes or colors). This can enhance the sensory experience and keep children engaged with various textures and visual stimuli.

More Ways to Explore Your Leaf Puppets:

  • Stage a puppet show!
  • Use a simple field guide to identify the type(s) of leaf you used for the puppets.
  • Practice oral language with everyone taking a turn to say what their puppets name is.

You can even use the puppets to start building a foundation for literacy. Even if students aren’t quite ready for decoding, these Pumpkin CVC Word Building Mats are great for oral language development too!

What are the learning benefits of making fall leaf puppets?

The fall leaf puppet craft is ripe with learning opportunities for young learners!

  • Fine Motor Skills-kids will need to squeeze, press, glue, and place googly eyes to make their puppets. Each of these movements will help to strengthen the tiny hand muscles necessary for handwriting.
  • Language/Vocabulary-once the puppets are done, children can “play” with their puppets by engaging in imaginative conversations, making up names and scenarios for their leaf buddies, or even working through emotions and conflict through puppet play. You can pair this activity with one of our emotions board games for an SEL lesson.
  • Nature Appreciation-crafting with leaves brings an awareness of nature and can lead to so many tings, like types of trees, habitats, local tree species, and how to care for plants and trees. This becomes even more meaningful with a fun fall scavenger hunt to observe the way nature changes in the fall.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are frequently asked questions about making our Fall Leaf Puppets.

Can I use real leaves for the puppet craft?

Yes! Keep in mind that real leaves become dry and brittle, but you can absolutely use them. One way to preserve the leaves before they dry out is to place them between to sheets of contact paper.

Can I add arms and legs?

Sure! Attach additional craft sticks to the main stick to make your leaf puppet really come to life with arms and legs.

Will glue sticks work?

In my experience with textured items and googly eyes, liquid glue works best. Plastic eyes often fall off quickly when using glue sticks. You could always try one and wait until completely dry to see how it holds up.

I hope you loved this easy fall craft as much as I do! I’d love to hear how you and your preschoolers used the puppets for further learning. Comment below!
