How to Use the CVC Words Printable Task Cards:
Step One:
First prep the CVC words printable task cards by printing, cutting the pages in half and around the colored edges, and laminating them for longevity. There are two cards for each short vowel sound. That’s a total of 10 CVC picture cards that fit snuggly in a little task card box!
Step Two:
Choose one of the CVC Words printable task cards to begin with. Identify the target vowel sound at the top of the card. Talk about what letter it is and what sound it makes. Then, orally identify the first picture on the card. Ask students to repeat the word, then hold up a finger for each sound in the word.
Tip: An alternative teaching technique is to move your arm like a “roller coaster” as you say the three sounds in the word, with the vowel sound at the “peak” of the hill and the surrounding sounds at the bottom and base.
Step Three:
After saying all the sounds, tell students that the vowel sound is found in the middle. Ask students to identify the vowel sound. Repeat all the sounds as necessary for kids to be able to correctly identify the vowel sound.
Step Four:
Place a bingo chip or other manipulative on the picture IF it matches the targeted vowel sound for that card. If not, leave it blank. Repeat with the next picture on the card.
Yay! You did it. What Now?
To ensure that your kids are rockstars with these CVC Words printable task cards, I like to introduce these types of activities in small groups first, so all children know exactly how to use the activity appropriately. From there, I will assign as needed for independent work, or continue to work with small groups of kids that might need more guidance.
Ways to Differentiate the CVC Words Printable Task Cards
- Simplify instructions: If identifying the vowel is too tricky, some kids can simply name each picture, or identify the beginning sound for each CVC Word picture instead.
- Extend learning: For those that can fairly quickly identify the vowel sound, extend the learning by having them write the vowel on a whiteboard, or even try to write all the sounds they hear in the word.
- Focus on one vowel at a time: Instead of working with all vowel sounds, choose one, identify it, and then focus on only those pictures that contain that vowel sound as you work through the mat with learners. Continue by naming other words that have that short vowel sound.
When your students are ready to match letters with sounds and begin decoding:

- CVC Words /e/ Task Cards
- CVC Words /i/ Task Cards

The Importance of Phonological Awareness in Early Reading Instruction
When I said that learning to read begins with the ears, I was not kidding! Phonological awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate the sounds in spoken language, including the ability to identify and work with syllables, rhymes, and individual phonemes (sounds). It’s a crucial skill for early reading development, helping children understand how sounds form words.
Phonological awareness is crucial because it helps children understand that words are made up of individual sounds, which is essential for decoding words when reading. When we move on to introduce letter names and sounds, it helps children connect sounds to letters and letter patterns. Ultimately, strong phonology skills will help improve the ability to break down and blend sounds, leading to smoother, more fluent reading.
