Recommended Grade Level:
Learning About Numbers 1 to 20:
Counting is a crucial prerequisite skill in math. Students must be able to count fluently to be able to understand more complex concepts.
When paired with lots of oral counting, preschool number worksheets help students form concrete understandings of numbers, digits, and quantities.
I always begin the year by thinking of the transition times where I would like to incorporate counting. Maybe before or after a Math lesson, while lining up, before or after serving snacks, etc.
When I am consistent with the routine, the students make sure it’s not forgotten! We may begin by counting 1-5, then 1-10, and so on. The beauty of oral counting is that you can build on it all year long.

Each printable number tracing worksheet provides FIVE opportunities for children to learn and understand each digit. Your students can:
What Do Free Number Tracing Worksheets Teach?
Working with each number in multiple ways helps students develop a concrete understanding of numbers (number sense)
These Fall number writing worksheets are so versatile! You can adapt the preschool/kindergarten worksheets to suit all of your students’ skill levels. Keep these questions in mind:
- Is your number greater/less than ten?
- How many more ten frame squares do you need to fill to make ten?
- Can you make the same number on the ten frame in a different way?
- Does this numeral look similar to/different than other numerals?

How Can I Help Preschoolers Develop Number Sense?
Preschoolers thrive with hands-on math activities that engage all of their senses. You can help them develop great number sense by incorporating some of these activities:
Compare Numbers
Take opportunities to talk about which number is bigger/smaller. Use math terms like greater than/less than, or more/less. You can even do it at snack time!
Subitize
Subitizing is the ability to look at a set of objects (often dots) and determining the number in the set without counting. Children develop this skill by rolling dice or looking at dot cards.
Number Line
Refer to number lines often. Practice oral counting while pointing to each number, or search and find specific numbers on the number line. Dot-to-dots are essentially number lines that create a picture!
Use Manipulatives
Use a variety of manipulatives as much as possible. Children can place counters on a ten frame, count groups of plastic bears/frogs/etc., or they can use playdough to form the shapes of the numerals.

Your child can build numbers on the ten frames with objects, or they can draw a circle in each square to represent it on each ten frame.
Extend the Activity:
Create a Book
Encourage students to complete each page with their best work. Then, laminate and assemble the pages into a number reference book.

Oral Counting Skills
Use the math worksheets to encourage and practice oral counting on each 10 frame, or with each set of pictures.
Play a Game
Create a game by placing the preschool worksheets upside down. Children can flip over a page and name the number, trace it with their finger, or count it on the 10 frame.
