Jaida is still building confidence with blends, so lots more practice is in order and I don’t like to repeat the same activities over and over. Variety is the spice of life, after all! So I created this free blends word building activity for her to get more comfortable working with blends.

You can do this activity with the printable ‘beads’ that I’ve included or you can get your own alphabet beads and string and create a multi-sensory activity.
Jaida loves little manipulatives and they are great for her since she is not fond of writing. She needs to build up those fine-motor skills somehow so we chose to use the alphabet beads.
I prepped the activity by printing and laminating the word cards.
Then, I added the letter beads and pipe cleaners into the dyed rice in one of our sensory bins and Jaida selected one of the word cards to spell.
She really loved searching through the rice to find the letters. This was good for both fine-motor practice and visual perception. Jaida has trouble with asking me to look for things that she is perfectly capable of finding, so having her practice in an activity like this is good because she didn’t even realize that she was getting better at problem solving.
Using cards that have the words spelled out helps kids by showing them the letter combinations. They also make the activity self-checking.
Beautiful colors and fun word building practice=success! It was a great way to take up a few minutes of time during these incredibly hot end of summer days!
