Uppercase Letter L Craft Differentiation For Diverse Learners

Differentiating for diverse learners is simple with this letter craft, but if that isn’t your strength, let me help you!

Provide a visual checklist for students to follow as they complete each step of the craft. This can help them stay organized and on track. It will also give them a boost of confidence and accomplishment as they check off each step they complete!

Challenge more advanced (or include older) students by encouraging them to write sentences next to each picture on the visual checklist listed above.  They will be excited to create an informational text that they can read to the other students!

For kinesthetic learners who enjoy hands-on activities, use materials like yarn for the mane or sandpaper for the lion’s body. These textures can stimulate their senses and give them a deeper connection to the craft.

For students with fine motor challenges, provide precut tissue squares or other collage materials. This allows them to participate without frustration while still practicing fine motor skills in a manageable way.

Math Connections Inspired by the Uppercase Letter L Craft

You can easily extend the fun of this craft into math by incorporating simple activities. Try creating patterns with the lion’s mane, counting the number of yarn pieces needed, or exploring shapes used in the design. These little math moments make the craft even more engaging and sneak in some extra skill-building! I’ll elaborate below…

  • Pattern Recognition: Use strips of colored paper to create different patterns for the lion’s mane. This can help children understand the concept of patterns while practicing their color recognition.
  • Shape Lions: After completing the craft, you can replicate the lion’s body using basic shapes like circles, rectangles, and triangles as mentioned before — but go a little deeper. Encourage students to explain which shapes they used for the lion’s face, mane, and body. Here’s a fun twist: don’t let them use the shape’s name. Instead, have them describe the attributes of the shapes. For example, the square is described in the following way. It is a flat shape. It has 4 corners (or vertices) and 4 straight lines of the same length. If your little ones need more practice with shapes, this “Flip” Button 2D Shapes and Colors Printable I Spy Game will help them!
  • Estimate & Count: For an added math challenge, estimate how many pieces of yarn will be needed to create the lion’s mane. Then, count the pieces in groups of ten to reinforce place value. Before counting, ask the students to make an educated guess, which helps them develop reasoning skills. Counting is such an important skill to develop at this age! Frequently Asked Questions

These questions might help you learn more about teaching letters and crafting with the Uppercase Letter L craft…

Should I teach uppercase at the same time as lowercase?

This answer might depend on your preferences and the children you are teaching. I like to focus on lowercase because they are more common when reading. Also, I’ve noticed that many students come to pre-K with more uppercase letter knowledge than lowercase. However, if your students come with very little letter knowledge at all, it might be helpful to focus on uppercase letters first. Once kids are confident, you can introduce lowercase letters as a natural next step.

You could also focus first on the letters of their names and the cases those letters use in their names. There are so many different ways to introduce the alphabet. Never forget, you are the ‘expert’ when it comes to your kids or your class!

Should I teach letter names and sounds together?

Yes! Teaching letter names and sounds together builds stronger connections, helping children recognize letters faster while understanding their purpose in forming words. Sometimes, it works well to start the lesson with the sound and then move onto the letter shape and how it is written. This Uppercase Letter L Craft will give your students or children adequate exposure to both the sound and the letter name so you are more than covered!!
