Winter has set in for good, which means that there is nothing but snow and ice for the next 2-3 months. You can make this part of the year exciting by bringing some of the elements of winter into the classroom. This snowman fine motor activity is a fun way for kids to strengthen fine motor skills and have fun with the season of winter at the same time. With just a few supplies, kids can transform basic white play dough into a whole winter scene and build their very own melt-proof snowman. Perfect for frozen lovers, kids who don’t like to touch snow, and anyone who needs a fast activity that will hold children’s attention for more than five minutes.
The only pre-prep stage for this activity is to cut out orange noses for each child from the orange felt. You can also cut the sticks down to size if necessary in advance.
Give each child a small tub of white playdough (don’t let them have any other colors at this time). Show the kids how they can use the materials provided to create 3D snowmen.
Some kids may prefer making 2D snowmen, which is also perfectly fine.
Arranging the face, beads for the mouth, buttons, and adding accessories to their snowmen helps children develop fine motor skills that make writing and other activities easier when they get older. Kids will spend hours making these fun snowmen. You might be surprised at the creativity you see in these projects. If you like, give the kids other accessories like pom poms and sequins for even more imaginative play.
