Uppercase Alphabet Uppercase Letter S Craft

This squiggly Letter S craft is a great way to teach the letter S by keeping your little one engaged and moving. Help your child color, cut, and glue the craft while reminding them of the letter’s name and sound. Once it’s done, you can celebrate their hard work and move on to the next letter! Need ideas for that next letter? Check out these Fun and Easy Alphabet Crafts for Kids, packed with options that let your child choose the next letter based on their interests.

Let your child take the lead and make learning more exciting! When kids feel included in the decision-making process, they’re more eager to participate. Some kids might be drawn to the slithery snake while others might have an obsession with iguanas. If you’ve got a student that loves iguanas, you’re in luck! The iguana is one of the scaly creatures featured in Life Over C’s letter crafting activities, so go check out the Uppercase Letter I Craft.   Appealing to their interests makes the whole process go more smoothly (and makes learning much more fun).

What Your Child Gains from the Letter S Craft

  • Attention and Focus Practice: If your child struggles with focus, don’t worry—it’s completely normal at this age. Small activities like this one help them build stamina. Encourage them to stick with the activity in short bursts and celebrate their progress. Take as many brain breaks as your little one needs. And don’t worry, I’ve got brain break ideas for you here in this bundle –  Moving My Body Gross Motor Game.
  • Letter and Sound Recognition: This craft does more than just teach the letter S. As they cut along the curves of the S, they’ll physically connect with the shape of the letter. While working, they’ll also associate the sound of the letter S to the anchor word snake. By seeing, touching, and repeating the sound, they’ll solidify the letter and sound as a memory. This Tissue Paper Letter Activity is another great activity that will give your students more practice with the alphabet!
  • Fine Motor Skill Development: Cutting and gluing might seem simple, but these actions are a workout for your child’s fine motor skills. Grasping, pinching, and cutting strengthen the muscles they’ll use for writing, tying shoes, and other essential tasks they’ll need for kindergarten. Need more fine motor activities? Step-by-Step Instructions for the Letter S Craft:

Step One:

First, ask your little ones (or decide for them) if they plan to color their Letter S snake. This will help you decide if you will need the black-and-white or color version of the downloadable file.

Step Two:

Coloring a craft before cutting is much easier than coloring cut paper, so I like to have the kids color first, then cut. Make sure to repeat the letter name and sound as you work!

Step Three:

Glue the snake together (or onto the construction paper).  It helps the students to have an example already put together, but if they are struggling, you might consider doing it alongside them to guide them on each step.

Begin by holding the letter – or gluing it onto the construction paper. Then, glue the fangs, tongue, and eyes onto the head. Attach the headpiece and rattler to the letter S body to complete the craft!

Your Uppercase Letter S Craft is complete! Now What?

When the craft is finished, don’t just toss it aside—put it on display to inspire some fun physical activity! Hang it up in your classroom or around your house. As you pass by the craft, encourage your child or class to slither like a snake! You can even turn it into a lesson on alliteration with movements that start with the same sound for other letters, like ‘jump like a jellyfish’ or ‘crawl like a crab.’

Adapting Letter S Craft for Every Learner

  • Extend to Phonological Awareness: Take this craft a step further by introducing alliteration! Use words like a slithery snake to help your child develop early reading skills. Bonus: their kindergarten teacher will be impressed if they already know the word alliteration! For Phonological Awareness Information, go to this article on the Reading Rockets website.
  • Support Attention Needs: If your child starts losing focus, take a quick brain break. Have them slither like a snake around the room to reset. Brain breaks like this are a great way to get them back on track while building gross motor skills. Keep these DIY Sensory Balloons around for an impromptu brain break, also.
  • Modify Materials: If your child struggles with crayons or scissors, switch things up. Try chunky crayons, child-safe scissors, or even watercolors for a fun and low-pressure alternative. Watercolor painting with a paintbrush is an excellent way to build fine motor skills without requiring the same amount of grip strength as coloring.
