Goals and Objectives of the Uppercase Letter R Craft
This activity is more than a fun introduction to the letter R—it also supports essential developmental skills:
• Hand-Eye Coordination: Cutting, gluing, and assembling the rabbit helps improve coordination, which is crucial for writing, tying shoes, and other life skills.
• Beginning Sounds: By associating the “R” sound with the “rabbit,” children begin to develop phonological awareness, laying the foundation for reading skills like blending and segmenting. Young children need to hear each sound separately in a word, and the beginning is the easiest place to start.
• Shapes and Colors: While cutting the curves and straight lines of the rabbit’s features, kids naturally encounter shape concepts (e.g., circles, semicircles). This boosts vocabulary and visual-spatial skills. Another way I love to review shapes and colors is this Super Easy Pattern Block Shapes Sensory Bag.

Step-by-Step Instructions for the Uppercase Letter R Craft:
Step One:
First, consider if you plan to have the students color the rabbit. This will help you decide if you need to print the color or black and white printable. You might also have them color the craft before cutting them out.
Step Two:
Have the students practice those fine motor skills and cut apart the pieces. Put the rabbit together with glue, making sure to glue the arms, ears, and tail to the back. Glue the nose and feet to the top of the letter R.
Bonus Teacher Tip: Take a minute to practice prepositions and prepositional phrases with the students as you model how to put the craft together! ‘Accidentally’ put the nose on top of his head. Ask the students if you should glue the ears under his nose. See if they correct you, and have the students describe where the parts should go using prepositional phrases.
