How to Make the Letter V Volcano
Step One:
Decide whether you would prefer the black and white version or the color version of the template. Print.
Step Two:
If you chose the black and white version, it’s time to color! I like to color before cutting to avoid those little crayon marks all over the table!
Teacher Tip: Want more fine motor development? Have the kids color! Want to focus more on the letter formation/name/sound? Use the color version!
Step Three:
Cut out all of the pieces of the volcano.
Step Four:
Assemble the volcano according to the illustration in the corner. Students can follow step-by-step directions for this part, or they can look at the final product and construct it without assistance.
Volcano complete! What now?
Consider what you’d like your students to do with their letter crafts now that they are complete. Send them home? Keep them to bind with more alphabet crafts to make a complete alphabet craft book? Display them in the room or hallway? Take a picture of each students’ craft and later print that with the other alphabet crafts? You obviously have options!
How to Differentiate the Letter Craft
We want all activities to be meaningful in some way to each of our learners. Sometimes, that means adjusting a craft to accomplish that goal. Here are a few ideas on how to differentiate the Letter V craft:
- Use Pre-Cut Shapes: Provide pre-cut pieces of the letter V and volcano parts for children who have difficulty cutting. This allows them to focus on assembling and decorating the craft.
- Offer Various Materials: Introduce different materials like tissue paper for lava, sandpaper for the volcano’s texture, or cotton balls for smoke. This variation helps engage sensory learners and adds a tactile element to the craft.
- Simplify or Add Complexity: Simplify the craft by reducing the number of pieces or focusing solely on decorating the letter V. For more advanced learners, add details like drawing or gluing on small rocks, trees, or even dinosaurs around the volcano.
- Incorporate a Coloring Option: For children who may not be ready to cut or assemble, offer a coloring page version of the volcano and letter V. To do this, simply enlarge the volcano image on the black and white page and print for students.
