How Do I Make a Mini Farm Sensory Bin?
Putting the mini farm sensory bin together requires sorting and dying the pasta with acrylic paint, then mixing it together with lentils.
If you want to involve young learners in the process of prepping the sensory bin, go for it! It’s a great sorting activity as well as a lesson in colors and dying pasta.
Once the pasta is dyed and dried, your preschoolers will love digging through the bin to find and remove all the different types of pasta with various muscle-building tools.

- 3 c. dried green lentils
- 1 box of farm-shaped pasta
- Acrylic paint: green, red, pink, black and orange
- 5 sandwich-size plastic baggies
- Wax paper
- Cooking sheet
- Tweezers
- Tongs
- Cups

How to Make the Mini Farm Sensory Bin
Step One:
Cover a cooking sheet with wax paper and set aside.
Step Two:
Open the pasta box and remove/discard the packet of powdered cheese. Pour out the pasta and separate the shapes into individual piles.
Tip: Engage children’s help with this step for a wonderful way to practice sorting.
Step Three:
Add each pasta shape into a plastic baggie. Once all shapes are placed in a baggie, add 1-2 teaspoons of acrylic paint to each baggie.
Step Four:
Seal the baggie and carefully move the paint around to coat the pasta. This is also a great opportunity to get your youngest learners involved!
Step Five:
Carefully pour each pasta shape out onto the wax paper-covered cooking sheet. Try to get the pasta in a single layer. Allow the pasta 3-4 hours (or overnight) to dry.
Step Six:
Add the dried green lentils to a clean, dry sensory bin. Scatter the painted farm-shaped pasta over the green lentils.
Add tweezers, tongs, cups, and scoops. Enjoy!
Tip: The pasta and dried lentils can be stored in plastic baggies or a container with a
tight-fitting lid.
