Easy 4th of July Sensory Bottles for Preschoolers
My family loves the 4th of July and the beautiful fireworks that go along with it! We love to curl up outside on a blanket and look up as the fireworks soar across the sky. Over the years as a mom, I have found that after a long day of celebrating, not all of my kids stay awake until the fireworks show. So they won’t miss out on all the fun, we always do super cute crafts and activities during the day. These 4th of July Sensory Bottles for preschoolers are some of our favorites! Materials You Will Need To Create These 4th Of July Sensory Bottles:
- 12oz. – 16 oz. sensory bottle with wide mouth (the one used here is 16oz.)
- star buttons (red, white, and blue)
- pony beads (red, white, and blue)
- Buttons (red, white, and blue)
- 5 oz. bottle of Elmer’s clear school glue
- Warm water
Step-by-Step Instructions For Making This 4th Of July Sensory Bottle:
Step One:
Gather all of the materials needed for making your sensory bottle. Keep them in a bin or on a tray to help keep the mess contained and to make anything you need easy to grab.
Step Two:
Grab your measuring cup and fill it with about 2 cups of warm water. Pour the glue into the warm water, and stir well with a fork or whisk.
Tip: I’ve found that the method above helps to keep bubbles from forming in the sensory bottle. Sometimes when you pour the glue straight into the sensory bottle and shake it, it can create a lot of bubbles! If you do find that bubbles have formed you can give them a few minutes to settle, or scoop them out with a spoon.
Step Three:
Pour the glue and water mixture into the bottle. Be sure to only fill it halfway so you have space for the other items you are going to add to the sensory bottle.
Tip: I have found that a funnel can help with eliminating the possibility of a mess when pouring the glue and water mixture into the bottle!
Step Four:
Grab your red white and blue contents of the sensory bottle: stars, beads, buttons or whatever feels patriotic to you! Put the accessories into your bottle on top of the glue mixture.
Step Five:
Fill the remainder of the bottle with the water and glue mixture. If bubbles form at the top of the bottle, you can scoop them out with a spoon or allow time for them to settle.
Step Six:
Finally, tightly close the lid to the bottle. For an extra layer of security against leaking, you can glue the lid on or add tape to help seal it shut. Mix the bottle around and let the contents move around freely in the bottle. Now you’re ready for sensory fun!

What Are The Benefits Of This Sensory Bottle?
Sensory bottles are the perfect way to stimulate the senses of your toddler, while avoiding the mess that can sometimes be made with a sensory bin. Sensory bottles are also good for small children because all of the small objects that could be choking hazards are sealed inside the bottle, so little ones won’t even be able to try to put them in their mouths.
If you do think your toddler is ready for a sensory bin, or you have some older children at home, you should definitely check out our Fabulous Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Sensory Bin!
Sensory bottles are mainly beneficial for visual stimulation, but they can also be great for fine motor skills. As little ones are gripping the bottle, shaking it from side to side, and turning it upside down and right side up, they are strengthening their hand and finger muscles and working on coordination skills. Frequently Asked Questions
These are frequently asked questions about this July 4th Sensory Bottle:
What is the best bottle to use for a sensory bottle?
Any clear, plastic bottle will work well for a sensory bottle, but I like using Voss water bottles because of their shape and smooth surface. Many craft stores sell clear sensory bottles if you don’t want to reuse a water bottle.
What liquid can I put into a sensory bottle?
Clear glue, baby oil, cooking oil, and hair gel all work well as sensory bottle fillers. You can thin out these liquids using water, or add food coloring for extra color.
Why are sensory bottles also called calm down bottles?
Sensory bottles are also called calm down bottles because the slow and gentle movement of the accessories inside of the bottle can help to soothe an upset child and calm them down. Check out this Patriotic Calm Down Jar for another great, soothing sensory bottle!
What age group is a sensory bottle for?
I’ve seen kids ranging from age 3 months to elementary school age enjoying sensory bottles, but I have found they keep the attention of toddlers best! If your child seems interested in sensory bottles don’t worry about their age and allow them to explore. You do want to be sure to always closely supervise the use of a sensory bottle just in case it were to spring a leak or if the lid were to come loose.
