What Is It Important To Play With Play Dough?

It always seems crazy to me how something as simple as play dough can have so many benefits. For starters, play dough is wonderful for strengthening finger and hand muscles, which in turn helps with fine motor skills. No matter if they are squishing and squeezing, twisting and turning, or stretching and flattening the dough, they are using their hand muscles and building their muscle strength.

Because play dough can be shaped and molded into just about anything, it is awesome for encouraging creative and imaginative play. Children love showing off their creations and telling us all about them, which is wonderful for their language development and communication skills. What Will My Child Create While Using This Play Dough Invitation?

I happily answer this question by saying, “I don’t know!” And that’s one of the awesome things about play dough invitations. Each child will have their own creative and unique ideas sparked by the play dough tray. Some children (my daughter would most likely be in this category) may choose to create a patriotic creature. Others (this would be more my son’s style) may create patterns or cut out neat shapes with the cookie cutters.

In my experience as a teacher, I have seen children use play dough trays to create their name, make their own pretend food, or even just make a fun unique design on a circle of play dough.

That’s what so easy about a play dough tray! You don’t need to give instructions, and you just let your child decide where they want their open-ended play to lead!
