ALPHABET ACTIVITIES WITH EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNERS

EVEN WHEN YOU INTRODUCE ONE LETTER EACH WEEK, STUDENTS WILL NEED EXTRA PRACTICE NAMING LETTERS AND SOUNDS AND LETTER FORMATION THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR.

Learning the alphabet can get confusing for young learners! Each letter has its own name, a capital letter and a lowercase letter, its own sound, AND a unique way to write it.

You can pick and choose when and how to use the Letter W worksheets for kindergarten or preschool, depending on whether you students need practice identifying lower and uppercase letters, naming sounds, or letter tracing and writing.

What Can Kids Learn From Letter Worksheets for Preschoolers?

preschool and kindergarten letter worksheets

FOCUSING ON ONE SKILL AT A TIME CAN HELP CHILDREN LEARN THE ALPHABET. I LIKE TO TEACH LETTER NAMES FIRST, THEN MOVE ON TO LETTER SOUNDS.

Working with the alphabet helps children begin to understand that these funny shapes we call letters have a specific purpose and help us crack a code we call reading.

Get your students thinking about the purpose and scope of letters with thought-provoking questions:

  • What are the letters in your name?
  • How many sounds do you have in your name?
  • What other words start with the /w/ sound?
  • Does letter W have curvy lines, straight lines, or both?
  • Does lowercase w look the same as uppercase W?

Why Are Preschool Letter Worksheets Important?

Besides the fact that kids love hands-on learning activities, there are so many other reasons that learning the alphabet creates a strong foundation for future learning.

Visual Discrimination

Identifying letters (both lower and uppercase) encourages kids to use visual cues to discern between them. This is an important skill when later discerning letters to decode words.

Improve Understanding

As children learn to name letters and sounds, it helps them connect to what “reading” really means and gives them valuable insight and background to the idea that they, too, will soon learn to read!

Automaticity

The goal is for children to effortlessly recognize letter names and sounds interchangeably before they begin to put the pieces together to learn to read. If recalling sounds is too laborious, it will be difficult for a child to read with fluency.

Confidence

Kids need lots of time and repetition to accurately name all of the letters and sounds. Imagine how proud they feel when they accomplish such a lofty goal!
