Learning the Alphabet
PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN LETTER WORKSHEETS
LEARNING THE ALPHABET IS A CRUCIAL FIRST STEP IN LEARNING TO READ. IT’S OFTEN THE FIRST EXPERIENCES KIDS HAVE WITH FORMAL LEARNING.
Typically, kids learn the letters in their own name and then the rest of the letters sort of take off like wildfire.
It’s really important to include a lot of time for preschoolers and kindergarteners to explore letters from a lot of different angles: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, letter names, letter sounds, letter tracing, letter formation.
Since that is so many skills wrapped up in one LARGE package we call the alphabet, it helps to have a lot of varied and engaging activities to give to our kids.
The Letter J preschool worksheets are ideal practice pages to target a number of different skills:
- Letter Tracing: THREE different versions, depending on abilities/motor skill development
- Cut and Sort: Uppercase vs. Lowercase and First Sound Pictures
- Read and Color: Sight Words/First Sound/CVC and CVCC Words
- Find the Letter Worksheets: I Spy and Grid formats
- Roll and Write: A fun dice game to practice writing Letter J
- Rainbow Writing: A colorful way to complete a tracing letter worksheet
- First Sound: Pictures and words to help children hear the /j/ sound at the beginning of words
- Do-a-dot Marker: Large letter shapes to help young learners explore Letter J
What Do Preschool Letter Worksheets Teach?
LEARNING LETTERS AND SOUNDS WITH PRESCHOOLERS AND KINDERGARTENERS
PRESCHOOLERS AND KINDERGARTENERS NEED PLENTY OF PRACTICE AND REPETITION TO BECOME CONFIDENT IN LETTER NAMES AND SOUNDS. IT LAYS AN IMPORTANT FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE READING SUCCESS.
It can be difficult to find worksheets that target more than one skill. I wanted to include options for both letter tracing worksheets (free), letter formation worksheets, and letter sound worksheets so you can differentiate based on your students’ abilities, skills, and needs.
Use the Letter J sound worksheets and printable activities to encourage thinking, comparing and contrasting:
- What are the letters in your name?
- Do you have letter J in your name?
- What other words start with the /J/ sound?
- Does letter J have curvy lines, straight lines, or both?
- Does uppercase J look like lowercase j?
Why Is It Important For Kids To Learn Letters and Sounds?
Letter recognition worksheets and activities are an important part of learning how to read. When kids become familiar with letter names and sounds, they will learn how to read with greater ease.
Visual Discrimination
Identifying letters (both lower and uppercase) encourages kids to use visual cues to discern between them. This is an important skill when later discerning letters to decode words.
Improve Understanding
As children learn to name letters and sounds, it helps them connect to what “reading” really means and gives them valuable insight and background to the idea that they, too, will soon learn to read!
Automaticity
The goal is for children to effortlessly recognize letter names and sounds interchangeably before they begin to put the pieces together to learn to read. If recalling sounds is too laborious, it will be difficult for a child to read with fluency.
Confidence
Kids need lots of time and repetition to accurately name all of the letters and sounds. Imagine how proud they feel when they accomplish such a lofty goal!
