My oldest son is 13. He doesn’t hesitate to let me know, multiple times throughout the week, that he is now a teenager. Practically an adult! “With more age comes more freedom”, he says. “With more age comes more chores”, I retort.

Number 13 doesn’t have to be a huge responsibility for kids (or adults). We can remind our littles that this bigger looking number is just the number 1 and the number 3 smooshed together. Nothing to be afraid of.

Why Do We Teach Number Recognition?

NUMBER PRACTICE WORKSHEETS

MOST EARLY LEARNING PROGRAMS HAVE NUMBER RECOGNITION AS A KEY COMPONENT IN THEIR MATH CURRICULUM.

Number recognition can be difficult for some students to initially comprehend. We aren’t born being able to, BAM, know that a 1 and a 3 make the number 13.

When children better understand what a number is and means, they can say the number’s name, differentiate it from other numbers, match it to it’s quantity, and experiment with adding and subtracting.

Children need practice and hands on activities in order to master number recognition, counting, and writing that number.

That is why I love these printable number 13 tracing worksheets! And by the way, did you see that they are FREE worksheets with number recognition activities.

The number worksheet can be used in your day in a “number” of ways!

  • Math centers or groups
  • As homework
  • Guided review
  • Students that have finished early

While counting is extremely important, the free printable worksheets give children other opportunities to fine tune other developmental math skills.

Here are some questions you can ask your kiddos before, during, and after using the number 13 worksheets.

  • Describe how you write the number 13?
  • Is 13 greater than/less than 10? How do you know?
  • What other ways can we make groups of 13?
  • What do you wish you had 13 of?

Why Do We Teach Kids About Numbers Anyway?

Printable number worksheets give children different opportunities to practice number concepts. Future math journeys include more complex thinking.

Everyday Exploring

People use math every day. Whether you are following a recipe for your chicken dinner, or balancing your checkbook; math is used in so many different times and situations throughout your day. Our kids wont be diving into the world of taxes any time some, however they will need to know how many invitations they will need for their birthday parties and how to make sure they have the same number of cookies as their siblings.

Measurement Matters

Understanding the sequence of numbers is important when it comes to measuring. A ruler looks similar to a number line and is a great tool for building or creating. Knowing that 4 is less than 13 can be the difference between a tasty cake or a very dry one.

Recognizing Patterns

Patterns occur all around us. In nature, during our daily schedules, in art. There are also patterns in math that need to be understood by children. You can make any number, big or small, if you can identify and understand 0 through 9. Patterns in math can be found in counting, adding, and subtracting.

Enhances Dramatic Play

Adding math into dramatic play is a wonderful way for children to experience the real world and get the mathematical practice they need. Try adding a cash register, receipt book, and child-made menus with prices in your dramatic play area. Children can practice their math skills while also working on social/emotional task. Examples could include: Flower shop, grocery store, bank, restaurant, and bakery.
