Free Printable Uppercase Letter Q Craft Template
Teaching the letter Q is guaranteed to be a fun adventure with this Uppercase Letter Q craft! The letter Q is such an interesting challenge because it’s almost always paired with the letter U. As a teacher, I’m amazed every year by how many students already notice the Q + U connection before I even teach them about it!
One of my favorite strategies for teaching letters is to pair them with a motion—and Q is no exception. Kids learn faster when their whole body is involved. For Q, I like to move my hands up and down above my head as if my hands were a queen’s crown It’s a simple, fun gesture that helps kids remember the sound Q makes. Motions paired with a memorable craft are the perfect anchor cues to help your preschoolers learn the letter Q!

Step-by-Step Instructions for the Uppercase Letter Q Craft:

Adapt and Modify the Letter Q Craft for All Learners
Challenge advanced learners: Have kids spell out Q words like “quilt” or “queen” and decorate their craft with those words. Have them try to create an alliteration or tongue twister for their craft like, ‘The quiet queen quilts quickly.’ Write it for them if needed and have them highlight all the qu combinations they see.
Check for ‘Thumbs Up’ Cutting: If a child struggles to use scissors, make sure their thumbs are on top as they cut; correct them when they turn their hand over to cut. I have noticed many of my students holding the scissors incorrectly with their thumbs turned down toward the table. I remind them with a ‘thumbs up on top’ verbal cue.

Add Sensory Elements: Use textured paper or fabric scraps to keep distracted or disinterested learners engaged.
Simplify for Younger Learners: Pre-cut the craft pieces for kids still working on cutting skills. Have an early finisher pre-cut pieces of tape for a child who misuses glue.

Frequently Asked Questions
These FAQs will help address common concerns and provide helpful tips for a successful Letter Q craft!
How do you explain the letter q sound to young children?
Model, model, model!! Use simple, kid-friendly language to describe what your tongue, teeth, and mouth are doing when you make the sound. Talk about if you feel your voice on or off as you make the sound. Allow the students to describe what they notice as they make the sound. Use several different anchor words and isolate and exaggerate the /qu/ sound in those words.
Can I tie this craft into other lessons?
Of course!! Make the most of your time with your students by incorporating other skills into this crafting session! Turn it into a rhyming lesson by changing only the beginning of queen into green, mean, bean, lean, etc. Talk about what sounds the same and what sounds different in those words. Introduce or review alliteration by creating a word bank of words that start with q+u and try to use them to write a sentence.
How to teach the letter q?
I like to focus on the sound first. Talk about how the qu makes a “kw” sound (as in queen), and explain that Q is almost always followed by U in words. Use visual aids like a picture of a quilt or a queen (like this craft) to connect the letter to common anchor words. Practice writing uppercase and lowercase Q, and make it fun with activities like a Letter Q craft, tracing sheets, or a scavenger hunt for Q words.
Help! My child or student doesn’t like crafting!
Don’t worry, some young children have sensory issues, and crafting can be overstimulating for those little ones! Quickly cut out the craft and glue it onto a piece of white paper. Make a copy of the completed black and white craft and let them use it as a coloring page. I like to keep these Free Printable Alphabet Coloring Pages on hand for these special students.
