Step-by-Step Instructions for creating your Rainbow Sensory Bin for Preschoolers:
Step One:
Decide what you want the base of your rainbow Sensory Bin to be. Whether it is rice, pasta or sprinkles— it would make the most sense for the base to be rainbow-colored. We used rice that was pre-dyed (available in most craft stores!). You can also dye your own rice or pasta, as well as buy confetti, sprinkles or shred that is already multi-colored.
Step Two:
Begin to layer in any and all rainbow items into the tray.
Teacher Tip: There is no reason to buy anything new! You can find blocks, balls, legos or any other item that comes in a variety of colors to include in the bin. If you want to splurge on things that are rainbow-shaped, you absolutely can!
Step Three:
Add in multi-colored pom poms to sort with tweezers or tongs. If you have a tray with multiple spaces, it would be great to sort the colors into different spaces. We have one that is rainbow-shaped, but any bowls, buckets, or even a miniature tackle box would do!
This specific bin is great, because all you need to do is switch out the different rainbow items that you want to sort, and the kids can use it over and over again.
Modify the Rainbow Sensory Bin for Preschoolers
Coloring Pages: If you are able to print out rainbow coloring pages, that would be a great way to make an extension to go along with the Sensory Bin. Students would be able to color the pages as seen in their bins.
Color Sorting: Color sorting is a great activity to use with a sensory bin, and this sensory Bin for Preschoolers is no exception! You can identify colors in the bin, sort them, and even graph or tally them.
