Use this fun police hat craft during your community helpers unit and bring to life the different professions that are so important to our communities.
One unit in almost every preschool classroom is one centered around Community Helpers. As teachers and parents, we point out the helpers in our community, such as police officers. We talk to our children how to call for help (dialing 911), we point out instances when we see people in our community helping others, and we encourage our children to be a good community member as well. Thanks Amanda Boyarshinov for this fun idea to accompany any community helpers unit!
Having community helper costumes out for children to play with is one way for them to role play how to help others. In the store, these costumes cost upwards of $20 each. Instead of relying on store bought learning materials, we turn to the supplies we have on hand – FELT!
We love using felt because it is an easy material to work with and budget friendly. This project took less than one hour and total supply cost was around $2.00. My children sew these headbands with me, making it a great learn-to-sew project for children as well! DIY Police Hat Craft for Preschool Pretend Play and Learning
Blue, yellow, gray or black felt
Needle and thread
Directions to make the police hat craft:
Cut the police hat pieces out of felt. I use a 3 inch band with that is 24 inches long and freehand the other pieces. You will need a blue hat shape, yellow medal, and black or gray brim.
Assemble the pieces in the places you want. Pin in place.
Using a straight stitch, attach the police hat features to the main headband piece. For the hat’s brim, leave space at either side open, so that it will stick out when the child wears it. This is the step where I let my preschool sew. I get the needle started and hand the project over. He puts the needle down, pulls it through, and back up again. This is patterning and real life math. Learning how to sew is also a life skill!
Set the completed police hat around your child’s head to measure. Sew the ends together so that it will fit around the top of their head.
Wear and act out parts of the stories!
